World Champion Mario Mifsud will be fielding his same championship winning team (above) that took the title last year. His hardcore gym in Birkirkara has become the temple of Maltese Powerlifting, also producing junior World Record holder in the Squat, Emanuel Schembri. Also on their team is monster bench press specialist Lawrence Ransley. The defending champions are a formidable force, however they will have to fend off some fierce competition this year.
Malta number three Charles Degiorgio (above) will be lifting at home and captaining the Fitness Planet team which presents a very real threat to the defending champions. Alexsander Dolgopolyk is ranked six and steadily rising. The 75kg lifter is in good stead to challenge for some records in that category. Also lifting on home soil is Malta number 11 and National record holder in the -100kg class Bench Press, Josef Spiteri.Top contenders not to be ignored are Raw Power from Sliema, consisting of Malta number five and team Captain Sean Galea (above), number nine Daniel Debono, and number 13 Eddie Attard. All three athletes possess the experience and consistency necessary to create an upset. All three lifters have competed internationally, while Galea and Debono specifically have been around in the local Powelifting scene from the very beginning. The smallest mistake from team Heay Metal or Fitness Planet, and Raw Power will be hot on their heels.
Malta number seven Kris Mintoff (above) will be captaining a brand new team with two unranked lifters. The Iron Gladiators will be this year's wild card team, possibly with a few tricks up their sleeves!
Lifters will weigh in at 1000hrs, and the lifting will commence at 1200hrs.
