May Test Competition: Road to the Europeans

The Feelgood Spa last Saturday May 24 hosted a small test competition as an opportunity for National team lifters to polish their game ahead of the 2008 WDFPF European Championships in Castleblaney, Ireland, next month.

1st on points, Matthew Muscat Inglott (above) showed good form considering he was in a hospital bed just 3 weeks earlier. As an 82.5kg lifter, he weighed in a tad overweight and lifted not at all far from his best, which means all his lifts were new 90kg category records. He totaled 535kgs.

Emmanuel Schembri (above) turned up determined to break Mario Mifsud's squat record in the 125kg category. He just missed his attempt at 222.5kgs but looks certain to get it soon. He totaled 582.5kgs at 111kgs bodyweight. Schembri will bypass Castleblaney and is earmarked for the World Single Lift Championships in Belgium in October.

3rd on points, Malta's hot prospect for the Junior 67.5kg category in Ireland, Daniel Debono (above) showed great improvement in both his squat and bench press. He had little left in the tank for his deadlifts but after his final preparations over the coming month he looks certain to impress at the Europeans. He totaled 372.5kgs.

Promising newcomers Adrian Debattista (above) and Mahir Riahi (below) both registered respectable first time performances in the 110kg and 82.5kg categories respectively.

The lifters who will be competing in Ireland are Matthew Muscat Inglott, Daniel Debono, Sean Galea and Kurt Bullock. We wish them the best of luck.
